Body Example

Short-Course Late Model Bodies

Sportsman allows reasonable body choices, and short-course Late Model bodies are a common option for racers who want a traditional dirt-oval appearance.

Sportsman body choice remains flexible. These are common short-course Late Model examples, not the only body style permitted in Sportsman. Review the current rules before cutting or mounting the body.
Common Starting Points

Platforms & Manufacturers

These are practical starting points, not additional rules.

Common Choice

1

Traxxas Slash 2WD LCG is the most common lower-center-of-gravity starting point.

Common Choice

2

Traxxas Slash 2WD HCG remains legal and durable for newer racers.

Common Choice

3

Stock radio equipment works; upgrade the radio only after the car is reliable.

Race-Day Reliability

Recommended Spare Parts

Carry the parts most likely to end a race day after a crash or drivetrain failure.

Parts Worth Carrying

1Front and rear suspension arms
2Steering blocks, caster blocks, and rear hubs
3Turnbuckles, rod ends, and servo-saver parts
4Shock shafts, seals, caps, and legal replacement shocks
5Spur gears, slipper parts, and transmission bearings
6Body mounts, clips, wheel nuts, and hardware
7One known-good servo
8A second legal tire set

Build a Parts Box

Keep common hardware, drivetrain pieces, steering parts, and suspension components together in one labeled container.

1Use manufacturer part numbers.
2Test electrical spares first.
3Organize hardware by size.
4Replace bent parts before major events.
5Restock after every race.
Before Technical Inspection

Pre-Race Inspection

A legal car can still lose track time through loose hardware, leaks, or a failed transponder.

Class Check

1Verify the electronics are one of the legal combinations.
2Confirm stock-part and RPM limits before installing upgrades.
3Keep left and right suspension arms on their correct sides.
4Secure the battery and keep it at or below 8.44 volts.
5Check steering return, shock leaks, gear noise, wheel nuts, and tire glue.
6Confirm the transponder is reading.

Universal Check

1Steering moves freely and returns to center.
2Suspension moves without binding.
3Wheel nuts and chassis hardware are tight.
4Tires are glued and legal.
5Body, battery, receiver, and wiring are secure.
6I-Laps transponder is reading.
Safe Starting Point

Baseline Setup

1Begin with stock suspension geometry and a free-moving chassis.
2Use repeatable left/right ride-height measurements.
3Set mild negative camber and neutral steering first.
4Choose a predictable tire instead of maximum grip immediately.
5Record the baseline before changing anything.

Record Before Adjusting

The setup sheet preserves the baseline. The quick tuning sheet gives a small adjustment direction. The Driver's Library explains why it works.
